University of Toronto
Year Completed: 2005
Location: Toronto, ON
Though this wall does exist, it cannot thrive to our definition of an ecosystem due to the lack of maintenance the university provided during the initial stages of its existance. The initial stages is the most crucial point of looking over the condition of plants and fish as they are introduced in a completely new and different environment, without the proper maintenance the system only lives on its bare life support.
Although not the largest this unit was a great show case of all the technologies developed at the time.
The system even addresses the affordable issue, in that it has been designed to be delivered in two stages; the ‘breathing walls’ to be delivered as stage two. The room also has been heavily equipped with state of the art computer environmental control systems. It is hoped that the tool can be developed to measure air quality in real time. An instrument that does not yet exist in the market we planned to then clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of ‘Breathing Wall’ ecosystems.
Consisting of a small corner ecosystem, and 4 straight walls, (4′ wide and 6′ high) it fills the room with fresh air and positive energy.
