Design

Our goal is to provide the best assistance in the creation of a self-sustaining ecosystem in accordance with our client’s requirements and budget

The innovative design of our Breathing technology is based on many critical components. These include the biotic components that make each ecosystem self-sustainable and successful as well as the abiotic components that make up the structural and mechanical support for each system.

Biotic Components

To provide the biological elements required for a thriving ecosystem our team designs and builds systems that generate the necessary nutrients to support a diversity of plants, animals and biomes.  Because of this, our systems eventually reach an equilibrium where they are self-sustainable.

Natural Model

The only vertical thriving natural ecosystems exist in the rainforest canopy and on the bows of tropical trees. In comparison, the ecosystems that exist on vertical and horizontal rock faces are sparse and ‘strained.’  We choose to model the lush, rainforest canopy biomes that are teaming with life and are truly sustainable ecosystems.

Biodiversity

We combine many biomes in combination with each other: aquatic, bog areas, waterfall biome, terrestrial biome, shoreline biome and wall canopy biomes.

These all serve to tremendously strengthen each other (just like they do in nature) and as well, “massively” add to the biodiversity.

Plant selection

Our team has expertise in plant selection. The inclusion of any plant in the ecosystem is analyzed carefully to avoid the need for plant replacement and excessive maintenance efforts. The only plants that reliably live in the canopy biomes are mosses and epiphytes (orchids, bromeliads, air plants, epiphytic ferns, cacti, etc.).

Nutrient Addition

We take a passive approach to nutrient addition.  Rather than adding chemical fertilizers to the water or soil, Genetron simply adds nutrients to the system by feeding the fish in the system once a week.  This begins the nutrient cycle that supports the survival of the plants.

Diagnostic program

Our ecosystems are designed to last forever. Instead of performing continuous plant replacement, a monitoring program of the wall’s health is provided in the first three years until a truly sustainable equilibrium is achieved.

Abiotic Components

To provide the necessary structural and mechanical elements for the ecosystem, our team designs and builds biomes that have adequate water flow, proper air circulation, appropriate growing medium and the correct lighting.

Growing Medium

We work with a hydroponic substrate, rock wool and lava rock.  As the ecosystem develops, it creates its own ‘living tissue’ by recycling the vegetation that is shed and cropped from the system, which then becomes a mulch.

Air Filtration

We can design systems that can more aggressively take CO2 out of the air than even a natural system would be able to.  This makes them ideal for environments where the levels of CO2 peak at certain points in the day, such as meeting rooms, cafeterias, kitchens etc.

Water

Canopy ecosystems constantly experience exposure to strong winds and a high rate of evaporation.  However, as long as the amount of rain is high, the ecosystem survives.  In order to replicate the amount and degree of purity of the rain water found in a rainforest, We utilize Reverse-Osmosis (RO) systems to produce demineralized water which equates to rain-water.  The system then ‘rains’ between 50 and 80 gallons of the RO water per day, through misters, onto the system at 5-10 minute intervals, every 3-4 hours.

Rather than constantly soaking the wall, however, the wall is soaked for one hour out of every six hours with system water.  This helps it become more resilient to dry conditions.

To ensure that the system always has enough water, even in the event of a power failure or pump malfunction, We have a system of baffles 8” apart on the wall.  These baffles make sure that the moisture would stay on the wall for more than two weeks, even without the pump operating.

Materials

Structurally, stainless steel powder coating is incorporated for maximal longevity.  Lighting, pumps and circulation equipment are top-of-the-line for optimal performance and duration.  Energy efficient lighting.
